Is X Really Worth All The Hype?
A general overview of the app from my perspective
Although Twitter became popular among celebrities and the
world at large a few years ago, I never felt the zeal to follow suit and join
the app. Additionally, after Twitter transitioned to X, I forgot about the app’s
existence because its name faded from conversations in my proximity. Thus, this
was my first time using the app as I was reminded of its existence and I had to
formularize myself with its features in order to complete this assignment.
I must say that I don't see what's so enticing about this app to many as I did not like it and would advise parents to keep
their children away from it as it does not have any age restrictions. This in
my opinion is a grave issue as X is known and available on a worldwide level which
means that its user base is undoubtably, extremely large and the fact that
famous personnel ritually use the app to communicate with their fans encourages
minors to gravitate towards the app. This attraction of minors coupled with the
app’s lack of age restrictions results in minors losing their sense of innocence
as they are exposed to everything that is posted to the app with the app’s poor
algorithm as their only means of protection from provocative, inappropriate
content.
However, I can give the app's creators credit for making it fairly easy to use and navigate. I’d say that
the most difficult part of using X was setting up my account which was not even
that hard to do.
In my personal opinion, some of the best ways to use X are:
- to educate oneself about local and foreign news and keep updated about politics,
- start a microblog whereby you keep others in the loop about your daily mundane activities or even express your thoughts and vent your emotions,
- actively seek for jobs by looking through job advertisements from companies or posting about your qualifications and keenness to come off of the unemployment list, and
- get fast answers about a time sensitive question.
X is different from other platforms in the following ways:
- it is predominantly a text-based platform centered around intimacy where users voice their thoughts and connect with other like-minded users,
- verified accounts can share tweets to a wider audience than regular users, and
- the user has the freedom to post whatever they wish without being heavily penalize.
X in a business context
The pros of using X for business are:
- networking opportunities - direct messages and mentions make it easy for businesses and influencers to form partnerships,
- monitor the competition - the current hashtags and posts that competitors use on the app can say a lot amount their business and marketing strategies, and
- real time engagement - X makes it easy for businesses to communicate with the public in a timely manner.
- X’s rapid-fire environment can result in misinformation spreading and discrediting the business before its representatives/owners have a chance to change the narrative by instilling the truth about the issue into its customers’ mind,
- privacy and security risks - digital footprints and poor security features make it easy for third parties to hack into a company’s business account and tarnish their brand or steal valuable information that they make have shared with a selected few through the app’s direct messages, and
- the algorithm is easily corrupted which can result in a business’ advertisements or posts being removed from their loyal customers’ main feed.
Business owners can use the platform in the following ways:
- to monitor the competition and make urgent decisions,
- utilize the app's rapid-fire nature to increase their ROI, and
- use trending, relevant hashtags to increase their chances with the algorithm, connect with the public and increase brand awareness.
